The Tata Centre for Development at UChicago (TCD) works to identify novel solutions to India’s most pressing development challenges and to ensure that these ideas are translated into outcomes that improve people’s lives. We do this using a unique approach that harnesses rigorous, evidence-based insights from UChicago economics research combined with strategic outreach and partnership with government, industry, and innovators. Representing the joint work of the Tata Trusts and the University of Chicago, TCD is creating a new model for impact in India.
TCD is an affiliated center of the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics.
2018-2019 Research Projects
The 2018-19 grant recipients represent a diverse and robust research portfolio for TCD. While selected projects are rooted in development economics, they cut across multiple disciplines, from health and education, to energy and environment, to fiscal reform. An expert committee reviewed 22 applications submitted through an open call for proposals among UChicago faculty and selected 14 for this first round of funding. The research proposals and pilot projects will be led by researchers from six different UChicago schools and divisions, for a total investment of $1.6 million.
Ongoing Partnerships & Research
Furthering the University of Chicago’s long standing connection to India, TCD has partnered with faculty and centers to support ongoing reach.
Innovation Challenge: Design Delhi
The University of Chicago and the Delhi government launched The Urban Labs Innovation Challenge: Delhi—a unique competition that crowdsourced the best local ideas to cut pollution in Delhi and meet the city’s future energy needs. The Challenge is a project of the TCD. The winners are working with the University of Chicago Urban Labs, the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago’s India team (EPIC-India), and the Delhi Dialogue and Development Commission to pilot and test their ideas.
